This recently completed oak frame pergola, tucked into a private country garden in the South of England, is one of those rare places where time slows down, and nature, design, and craftsmanship exist in quiet harmony.

Commissioned by a client seeking a peaceful seating area with a structre for a vine to grow around, the pergola now serves as both a focal point in the garden and a serene destination for morning coffee, reading, or relaxed conversation all under the dappled light of English skies.

The Design: Incoporating A Vine

The client approached us with a vision for a frame for climbing a vine, and a place to relax. A place that would feel entirely at home within their existing garden of mature hedging, cottage borders, and winding gravel paths.

It needed to be functional, but poetic, adding just enough structure to the space without ever overwhelming it. An oak pergola was the natural answer.

Designing for Stillness and Shade

We designed the pergola to fit within the esxiting space, simple in layout.

Key features include:

  • Sustainably sourced green oak, selected for its strength and long term beauty

  • Traditional mortice and tenon joinery

  • Open slatted joists, offering filtered light and allowing climbing plants to thrive

  • Shaped curved braces, adding both strength and softness to the overall frame

  • Discreet stone bases, lifting the posts slightly above ground level to preserve the timber

The pergola was positioned to align with an existing gravel path and overlook a natrual pond.

Craftsmanship Rooted in Place

Within a year, the oak will begin its natural transformation to silver-grey, echoing the weathered tones of nearby fencing and stonework, becoming not just part of the garden, but part of the story of the home.

A pergola, unlike a wall or roof, invites the landscape in. Over time, the climbing vine will thread its way through the rafters. Shadows will shift across below. Birds will perch.

For properties with well established gardens, an oak pergola can offer gentle and functional spaces without ever feeling out of place.
